As an emerging artist, I have carved a niche for myself with recognisable large-scale, visually arresting, minimalist abstract works. I have been a dedicated, full-time working artist since 2018.
My collection, 'Reciprocity,' is a testament to my belief in the interconnectedness of humanity. It is a series of dialogues, each piece a nuanced conversation about the give-and-take inherent in human relationships. 'Reciprocity' delves into the tensions and dynamics of these interactions, breaking them down to their elemental forms and illuminating the intricate dance of life.
My art celebrates simplicity, finding complexity within minimalism. This approach leads to an interplay of forms and colors that both captivates and challenges, with large-scale pieces amplifying this dynamic and evoking a spectrum of emotions from introspection to liberation.
Drawing inspiration from the Hard Edge movement of the 1960s, I explore bold shapes and colours, underscored by a commitment to purity of form. My work is distinguished by the integration of post-painterly techniques, creating a unity between paint and canvas where brushstrokes are imperceptible, making each colour application an integral part of the narrative.
This signature approach ensures that my art is not only visually striking but also deeply immersive. Each composition, seemingly simple, is a complex construction with profound thematic depth. I am committed to technical precision and conceptual richness, striving to create art that resonates on a universal scale, transcending cultural and linguistic boundaries.
In conclusion, my art is a visual journey through life's complexities, embodying the invisible bonds that unite us. With a focus on technical mastery and conceptual depth, I aim to create pieces that communicate globally, connecting and captivating audiences with their underlying message.
Fiona M. Debell
(b. 1973, Bedford, ENGLAND)
Lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, CANADA
BIO.
Self taught abstract artist Fiona Debell is recognised for her emotionally rich and compositionally thoughtful work. Her artistic calling was ignited when at just 18 years old she experienced a profound physical reaction and immediate connection to the work of Mark Rothko at the Tate Modern.
Emigrating to Canada from England in 2014, Fiona's art has evolved to encompass new perspectives and emotions.
In 2023 she launched a new collection, "Reciprocity". In this work Fiona explores the elemental components of human relationships. By breaking down personal interactions to their fundamentals, she
aims to create a space that encourages contemplation and introspection. The collection's central theme is the importance of reciprocity in forging meaningful connections.
ARTIST STATEMENT.
“My main goal is to engender pieces that capture the viewer's attention and elicit an emotional response or conversation. I believe that art has a unique ability to connect people where words won’t suffice.
Through my larger works in particular, I aim to create a space for contemplation, questioning and reflection.
In my use of colour and composition I aim to depict the subtle nuances of human connections, emphasising the importance of give-and-take in building and maintaining healthy relationships. My intention is to create pieces that resonate with viewers, evoke emotion, and inspire introspection into their own interactions and experiences”.
